Centre for International Health and Development
The UCL Centre for International Health and Development (CIHD) has
united the Centre for International Child Health, the International
Perinatal Care Unit and the International Health and Medical Education
Centre. It is an interdisciplinary collaboration of leading academics
working on health and development in a global context based within University
College London's Institute of Child Health. Research themes include
maternal and newborn health, nutrition, children in difficult circumstances,
child development and disability, HIV prevention and treatment, and
the evaluation of community interventions for policy and practice. CIHD
collaborates with a number of centres of excellence (especially in Africa
and Asia) and shares results of research widely so that they can contribute
to the improvement of the health, nutrition and development of children
in poor communities. They also work with a range of international agencies
and NGOs promoting the use of evidence-based good practice. The centre
also has an exciting MSc and PhD teaching programme and welcomes visitors,
especially to Source - a collection of more than 20,000 reports and
reviews - which is housed within the Institute's Library.

DAB - The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh
The Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (DAB) is a non-profit, voluntary,
socio-medical service organisation registered with the Ministry of Social
Welfare. It is the World Health Organisation's regional collaborating
centre for diabetes research in Southeast Asia. DAB established the
Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine
and Metabolic Disorders (BIRDEM) in 1980 to produce qualified manpower
in diabetes, endocrine and metabolism. BIRDEM provides specialized postgraduate
courses in various medical and health science disciplines under the
Postgraduate Faculty of Medicine of the University of Dhaka. Staff in
BIRDEM also conduct research into maternal and newborn health and are

ICDDR,B - International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh
ICDDR,B is an international health research institution located in
Dhaka, Bangladesh. With the changing trend in the world scenario in

KHRC - Kintampo Health Research Centre, Ghana
Kintampo Health Research Centre provides a base for field epidemiological
and other health research in the forest-savannah transition ecological
and cultural zone of Ghana. The Centre operates in the 4 contiguous
districts in the Brong Ahafo region namely, Kintampo, Nkoranza, Techiman,
and Wenchi. The Centre carries out relevant field and clinical epidemiological
studies to evaluate the impact of health interventions, in order to
improve the health status of less privileged people in the region. Staff

MIRA - Mother and Infant Research Activities, Nepal
MIRA was established in 1992 to develop cost-effective interventions
to improve mother and infant health in poor communities in Nepal. MIRA
is run by a group of committed Nepalese health and development professionals,
led by Professor Dharma Manandhar, and has pioneered new methods to
tackle the high levels of maternal and newborn infant mortality in Nepal.
Since 1992 they have conducted pioneering projects to look at cost-effective
methods to reduce birth asphyxia, improve nutrition for pregnant mothers
and babies, and to change behaviour through effective health promotion.
They work closely with the government sector, and have helped the Ministry
of Health to devise the national policy for newborn care at each level
